Just outside the city of Oxford is the village of Kidlington and here each year the 8 bells of their church St. Mary the Virgin ring out for St. George. On 23rd April of this year this wonderful band of ringers will be going for a Peal which is three hours of non stop change ringing. It is the toughest challenge in the ‘change ringing’ world so we thank them and wish them good luck.
Lincoln City
In this delightful city there is a special church which is the oldest and the last remaining to have a ring of bells. It is called St.Mary-le-Wigford and every year its four bells ring out to celebrate St. George and it will be doing so again this April 23rd. Chris Woodcock has kindly sent the photo.
YORK MINSTER
This remarkable and influential cathedral and minster is dedicated to St. Peter and has jurisdiction over the whole of the north of the country. Its architecture can boast of being the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. And here, with its 14 magnificent bells, it will ring out on April 23rd to celebrate St. George, the Patron Saint of England.

Good people of Plymouth………….
Unfortunately not all churches will be able to ring because their bell towers or bells require restoration of some kind. Such is the problem with this delightful church of St. Budeaux in Plymouth which has set up a fund to help with this urgently needed work. So good people of Plymouth please spread the word in helping the fund raise enough money to get St. Budeaux ringing in time for St. George’s Day 2014. Peter Sparkes standing in front of the church
ST. PAUL’S
There is hardly a superlative left in the English language that has not graced this Wren’s masterpiece. Inspite of being surrounded by modernism and height it stands proud and commanding in its own space. And this very special church will ring out and ring out and ring out for St. George. Its north west tower contains 13 bells and its other, the south west has 4 including its famous bell ‘Great Paul’ weighing in at 16 and half tons. Whilst St. Paul’s is London’s Cathedral they are only the fortunate custodians for it belongs in reality to the whole country and represents its spirit. So Londoners listen out on April 23rd for this great sound.
NEWCASTLE will lead The North East in ringing
The great sound of the 12 bells from the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas will be heard throughout Tyneside and echoing across into the beautiful countryside of Northumberland. It is aptly named after the patron saint of sailors and boats and in 1882 it became the country’s most northerly cathedral.
The ringers of GLOUCESTER Cathedral are joining in
This great cathedral of the west country has its foundations based on an Abbey dedicated to St. Peter built around 1072. Its architectural superlatives are that it has the oldest surviving fan vaults, and the earliest depictions of the game of golf in its stained glass windows. There are also those that say there is a carved image, the first ever, of the game of football. That might be so but ‘change ringing’ is now the activity with the cathedrals 12 bells soon to ring out for St. George.
The towers of South Nottinghamshire are joining in
The ringers of Clifton and Keyworth and other nearby towers are organising their bands to ring out for St. George.
Surrey towers are signing up for April 23rd
The many market towns along the Surrey Hills are getting organised to ring out with Guildford leading the way.
South Hampshire ringers are determined to join in
The huge city of Southampton and districts will be joined by other towers across the county down to Christchurch where they are organising themselves to ring out on April 23rd.
